Proclaiming the Word of God to the Congregation
As a minister of the Word, you bring forth the Word of God to the congregation. Lectors are needed for every Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Confirmed Catholics over the age of 16 are eligible to participate in this ministry.

1 PreparationPreparation begins at home. Advance study is vital to the proper interpretation of the Word. Please arrive in church early to:
- Review readings and petitions.
- Check with the priest and organist for instructions.
- Ensure the Lectionary is on the pulpit (it is not carried in procession).
2 Entrance ProcessionWalk directly behind the altar servers. Carry the Book of Gospels chest-high.
- At the front, line up with servers.
- When the priest bows/genuflects, you bow your head.
- Place the Book on the altar, then move to your sanctuary seat.
3 The ProclamationProceed to the pulpit when the congregation sits after the Opening Prayer.
Part Action Intro Read the declaration exactly (e.g., "A reading from...") Body Read slowly, look at the congregation, and pause briefly. Conclusion Pause, then say "The Word of the Lord." Note on Pacing: If the Psalm is recited, pause for 10-15 seconds after the first reading. Do not introduce the Psalm with "The Responsorial Psalm is..."4 General IntercessionsAfter the Profession of Faith, move to the pulpit. Provide the response to the people, then read each petition.
*If a Deacon is assisting, he will handle the Intercessions.
5 RecessionJoin the servers when the final hymn begins. Do not carry the Lectionary out. Mimic the priest’s bow/genuflect and process out.
